Do you want 4000 new units of housing on the toxic Zeneca site? Neither does Sue Wilson.

Dear Neighbor,

My name is Janet Johnson, and I’m an environmental advocate in Richmond. I want to tell you about an important local race that will make a big difference—positive or negative—in the future of Richmond's shoreline and those of us who live here.

Sue Wilson, a candidate for Richmond City Council in District 5 (Marina Bay, Richmond Annex, and Southside), opposes the construction of 4,000 units of new housing on top of the toxic waste left on our shoreline by over a century of chemical manufacturing. This area, between Marina Bay and Pt. Isabel, is known as the Zeneca site.

Endorsed by the Sierra Club, Asian Pacific Action Network, the League of Conservation Voters, CBE Action, and Lead Locally, Sue is helping organize against the plan to cap and build on top of this Superfund-qualified toxic waste site.

The scientific consensus is that a full cleanup of the site is the best plan to protect the San Francisco Bay, our wildlife, and most importantly, the health of those who live here. If Sue is elected, she will continue to fight for a full cleanup of this Superfund-qualified site.

The only other candidate in the District 5 city council race, Ahmad Anderson, strongly supports the developer's plan to build 4,000 units of market rate and affordable housing right on top of the toxic waste at the Zeneca site. When the issue came before the City Council in December of 2020, Ahmad urged them to cap-and-build "for the community, for the community benefits, and for the Southside”—though it's unclear how many Southside residents agreed with him about this plan. You can listen to his full comments here. Note that most of the so-called scientific evidence that Anderson cites has been discredited.

As a first-time candidate running against someone with local name recognition (both of Anderson's parents were former mayors of Richmond), Sue needs our help to win in November.  Below you’ll find the top  things you can do right now to support Sue’s campaign, the health of our shoreline, and Richmond residents.

Sincerely,
Janet Johnson
Environmental Leader & Richmond Annex Resident
